Chapter 14

Zhu City

DARKNESS AND COLD inundated my consciousness. Occasionally, it was broken by a flash of deep red, or the familiar sound of Alisa’s voice. But those were nothing but brief flashes, which blurred into the endless morass of frigid darkness.

At a certain point, however, I started to get warmer. Slowly, drop by drop, the cold started to recede. It took a very long time. I don’t know how long exactly, because I wasn’t able to think clearly at the time — my mind also felt like it was encased in ice.

“Archie...?” A quiet voice managed to reach down into my consciousness. And this time, I not only recognized it as Alisa, but also comprehended the fact that she was trying to reach me.

The thoughts in my head were slow and torpid, and that didn’t change for quite some time. The cold was preventing my brain from waking up.

“Archie!” After an indeterminate amount of time, I heard Alisa once again.

“Yeah?” And I managed to answer her!

“You’re recovering.” I could hear endless relief in Alisa’s voice. “Don’t be afraid. You’re safe. Rest for as long as you want. Nobody can get you here.”

“What?”

But Alisa was gone.

* * *

“He just moved!” I heard Boris’ overjoyed voice right next to my ear.

I winced. No need to shout, I thought...

“He just squinted!” Boris exclaimed, even louder this time.

“Because you’re screaming into his ear, you dumbass,” another voice snapped back. It sounded like a woman’s voice, but it was somehow strange. Too hoarse.

With quite a bit of effort, I opened my eyes and blinked.

“You’re the only dumbass here! I know how to read!”

“Liar! The only thing you ever learned how to read was your own name, and you can only make that out half the time!”

“Nonsense!”

I was lying on something warm and soft. There was sky above me, but it looked strange. Light purple, streaked with green clouds. I’d never seen anything like it.

“Archie!” Boris jumped onto my chest and started happily licking my face.

I reached out distractedly and touched the piglet. It was a weird feeling. I could sense Boris extremely acutely, as if he were literally a part of me. The joy, the childlike rapture, the immense relief — all of Boris’ emotions mixed together and literally transferred themselves into me. And I could also feel the warmth radiating directly from his body.

“What’s up with him, anyway?” The second voice asked, sounding slightly annoyed. I turned my head, and to my surprise I saw one more piglet — except this one had two pink braids on its head. Its eyes were bigger than Boris’, too, and they were green. But the tips of its ears were orange.

“Alisa, where am I?” I asked inside my head as I reached up to touch the left side of my face. It felt weird, and I decided I needed to investigate. To my surprise, my fingers came up against something hard — it definitely wasn’t skin.

“Ugh...”

You’re in the World of the Twelve, replied Alisa.

Despite everything, I smiled. I had missed her voice so much.
